Winter in Chicago can be harsh, not just on our spirits but on our scalps too. At DNW Luxe Hair Studio, I often get questions about how to differentiate between a simple case of dry scalp and signs that might indicate a more serious health issue. Let’s unravel this together! ❄️🔍
5 factors your scalp flakes are more than just dry scalp:
Understanding your scalp is really the first step in caring for it. here are five key signs that your scalp needs more than just a good moisturizing session:
Persistent Itching: A little itch here and there is normal, but if you find yourself constantly scratching, it’s a red flag. 🚩
Redness and Inflammation: Keep an eye out for any signs of redness or swelling. This could indicate an underlying skin condition. 🔍
Unusual Flaking Patterns: If the flakes are large, oily, or yellowish, it’s not just dry scalp. This could be seborrheic dermatitis or another skin condition. ❄️
Scalp Pain: Your scalp shouldn’t hurt. If it does, especially when you touch or move your hair, it’s time to seek professional help. 🚨
Hair Loss: We all lose some hair daily, but if you notice unusual thinning or bald patches, it’s important to address it promptly. 💇♀️
You've identified an issue now who do you call?
-Trichologist vs... Dermatologist and the answers you need.
Deciding whom to consult can be confusing, so here’s a simple guide:
Trichologist: Specializes in hair and scalp health. Visit them for issues like excessive hair shedding, hair thinning, and overall scalp wellness checks. 💇♂️🔬
Dermatologist: Specializes in skin, hair, and nails. Consult a dermatologist for scalp issues related to skin conditions like psoriasis, severe dandruff, or eczema. 🩺

My personal scalp ick....
I am a picker. No doubt. It's a weird tic I picked up in high school along with generalized anxiety. And when winter hits, I am no stranger to the itching and picking. So in the spirit of self experimentation I have embarked on my own little health journey which includes a little scalp massage, oil, less heat, and of course no keratin treatments for the last year and a half. And my results have been mostly plesant, especially as i learn more and more about the scalps own microbiome...(stay tuned for this in February when we discuss this nugget!)
Here are a few things I added to my routine so far. And if you click the instagram link below, you can learn more about how and when to use the now infamous scalp scrubbers (which you're likely using wrong!).
Ways to maintain a healthy Scalp starting today!
Hydration and Diet: Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet rich in b-vitamins, probiotics, and amino acids. Your scalp loves hydration, inside and out! 💧
Gentle Hair Care: Y'all gonna hate me for this one.... brush less or gently. Use gentle, sulfate-free shampoos to avoid over stripping the natural oils on the hair. Avoid excessive heat styling and if this isn't possible upgrade your thermal protection. At DNW Luxe Hair, I adore R+Co Super Garden hair mask for their scalp-food, friendly ingredients like peppermint and soothing CBD for redness and irritation. 🌿💦
Regular Scalp Massages: Boost circulation with regular scalp massages using a scalp massager on DRY HAIR, not wet. Hair is most fragile when wet, and friction causing rubber fingers can make breakage and tangles worse. Click here for VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS. This not only feels great but also promotes hair health by increasing blood flow, strengthening the follicle, and nourishing the skin.💆♀️
Remember, a healthy scalp is the foundation of fabulous hair. By understanding and caring for your scalp microbiome, you're not just taking steps towards eliminating flakes; you're nurturing your hair's potential for beauty and strength. Let's embrace the micro-world on our scalps and flourish this winter! 🌟❄️
